Lately, I have been asking the Holy Spirit to remind me that I need to pray. Jesus in speaking to His disciples said and I will pray to the father and He will give you another helper, that He may abide with you forever- the Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. (John 14:16-18)
Paul, as he was emphasizing the words of Jesus to the church in Rome, said in the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, we do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. (Rom 8:26-27)
In reference to the two verses, I understood the Holy Spirit to be my helper. In my temptations, in my life, in my pain, in my frustration but even more importantly in my faith. Our faith has different aspects – Bible study, Evangelism, fellowship, Quiet time, service, worship, prayer and any other aspect of the faith in which we may be weak. I know sometimes our life could have so much going on; in these moments we still need to work out our salvation.
When I got into the workspace my rhythm of quiet time had to change. I had to start looking at the prospects of having it late at night. I had to figure out how I can be more persistent in prayer and found I cannot do it on my own. I had to seek the Holy Spirit to help me.
Many times we think the Help of the Holy Spirit is only when we face temptations or when we want to drop off some habits. When it comes to the disciplines of the faith we think we only need him when studying the word because it is inspired by him. What we forget is that our faith in itself is a working of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore in order to start or continue growing the Holy Spirit has to help us.
By asking the Holy Spirit to help me in prayer. I can pray every hour for 5-10 minutes as long as I am awake. This is not the case every day but to the very least I pray in the midst of my affairs.
I pray before I leave the house
I pray en route
I pray when I get to the office
I pray before my meals
I pray as I work
I pray when someone sends me an alert to pray for them
I pray with people
I pray alone
I pray under my breath
What area in your faith needs to grow?
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you develop the discipline, grow in the discipline and develop a heart for that discipline.
This in itself is a reminder I need to pray
